- ➤ The City of Clarksville’s 16th annual Fright on Franklin will bring over 70 candy booths, a new Activity Zone, and a costume contest to downtown on Saturday, October 25 from 3 to 6 p.m.—local streets including Franklin, Public Square and Strawberry Alley will be closed at 9 a.m. to ease traffic. - ➤ On Tuesday, Say Yes to Recess, a parent-led group, spoke to the Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board asking for regular recess breaks for middle school students who get only five-minute transitions between classes (CMCSS). The group pointed out that while a state law now gives elementary students more physical activity time, middle schoolers are still not guaranteed the 90 minutes per week required for older students. - ➤ Austin Peay State University (APSU) will cover tuition for military spouses during fall classes to help them balance school and military life. The university (which supports over 400 military students) said the move comes as tuition assistance for military members has been delayed by the government shutdown. WSMV 4
- ➤ Steven Warth, a senior in APSU’s engineering physics program, became one of the first students chosen for Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s SULI program after his project on tritium breeding blankets set his fusion energy research path—his work cut simulation time from 16 hours to 30 minutes—showing promise for advancing reactor design. - ➤ A prolonged federal shutdown threatens to reduce SNAP benefits in November & the USDA warns that funds may be insufficient for many Tennessee residents who depend on the program. Tennessee officials have stated they will not replace federal aid with state money & nearly 690,629 individuals, about 9.5% of the state’s population, risk receiving lower benefits. - ➤ A new 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital for stroke and brain injury patients has been approved at the Ascension Saint Thomas campus off Exit 11 in Clarksville. Construction will begin in 2026 and the facility will open in 2028 as a partnership between Ascension Saint Thomas and Lifepoint Rehabilitation. NewsChannel 5

- ➤ Austin Peay State University will host its 80th homecoming game against North Alabama at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Fortera Stadium—fans can join a parade from Lot 7 at Burt Elementary starting at 11:00 a.m. and enjoy tailgate spots like Tailgate Alley, Coors Light Tailgate Experience, Governors Walk and City Forum family zones. - ➤ Austin Peay State University football player Chandler Kirton became the first in program history to be named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy—an award that honors top scholar-athletes.
